Baltimore, MD: Driver's License Renewal Checklist – Don't Forget Anything!

"Did you know you can't renew online without a vision test?"

This is the number one reason Baltimore drivers get stuck. Unlike many other states, Maryland requires a vision screening for every renewal. If you try to log in to the MVA website without one on file, you will be blocked.

Don't waste a trip to the Mondawmin or Parkville MVA. This guide explains the "Vision Provider" shortcut, how to use the 24-hour kiosks, and exactly what documents you need for a Real ID.

1. The "Vision Test" Trap: How to Solve It

Maryland law requires all drivers to pass a vision screening to renew their license. This applies even if you are renewing online or by mail.

  • The Problem: You cannot complete the online renewal until the MVA receives your vision results.
  • The Solution: You do not have to go to the MVA for this. You can visit an "Authorized Online Vision Certification Provider" (many local eye doctors, pharmacies, or grocery store optical centers).
  • The Process: They perform the test and electronically submit the results to the MVA. Once submitted (usually within 24 hours), the hold on your account is lifted, and you can renew online.

2. myMVA Online Renewal & 24-Hour Kiosks

Once your vision test is on file, you have two fast options to avoid the branch office lines.

A. myMVA Online Services

If you are under 40, or if you are over 40 and have submitted your vision certification, you can renew via the myMVA portal. Your new card arrives by mail in 7-10 days.

B. MDOT MVA Kiosks

There are self-service kiosks available 24/7 at certain locations. These allow you to renew non-commercial licenses, pay fees, and print vehicle registration tabs instantly.

3. Baltimore City & County MVA Locations

If you need a new photo, a Real ID for the first time, or have a suspended license, you must visit a branch. Appointments are mandatory for most services.

4. Real ID Checklist: The "Star" Requirement

By May 7, 2025, you will need a Real ID (marked with a star) to board domestic flights from BWI. Maryland has been very aggressive about this; if you have "Not For Federal Identification" on your card, you need to upgrade.

Bring these original documents to your appointment:

  • Proof of Age/Identity: US Passport or Birth Certificate.
  • Proof of SSN: Social Security Card or W-2.
  • Proof of Residency (2 Documents): BGE bill, bank statement, credit card bill, or lease agreement showing your Baltimore address.
