Washington D.C.: Renew Your Driver's License BEFORE It's Too Late!

"Living in the District is hard enough without dealing with the DMV."

If you are a Washington D.C. resident, letting your driver's license expire is a costly mistake. Unlike some states that offer long grace periods, the District is strict. If you wait too long, you won't just pay a fine—you'll have to retake the dreaded driving test.

This guide explains the "365-Day Rule," how to use the "Skip the Trip" app to renew from your couch, and which Service Centers have the shortest lines.

1. The "365-Day" Danger Zone: Retesting Rules

In Washington D.C., the consequences of an expired license escalate quickly. While you can renew up to 60 days before expiration, missing the date triggers the following:

  • Expired 1 Day to 364 Days: You can still renew online or in-person without testing, but you cannot legally drive.
  • Expired 365 Days or More: This is the danger zone. You must start over as a new applicant. This means you are required to retake the knowledge test (written) and the road skills test.
  • Late Fees: There are no specific "late fees" for the renewal itself, but driving with an expired license in DC can result in a traffic citation of up to $100 or vehicle impoundment.

2. "Skip the Trip": Online & Mobile Renewal

The DC DMV strongly encourages residents to "Skip the Trip." Most residents are eligible to renew online or via the DC DMV mobile app.

You can renew online if:

  • You have a Real ID (Star) or a standard license that has been verified previously.
  • Your address and name have not changed.
  • You are not older than 70 (drivers 70+ must visit in person with a doctor's certification).

Once renewed online, your license is valid for 8 years, and you will receive a temporary paper license to use immediately.

3. DC DMV Service Center Locations

If you must visit in person (e.g., for a first-time Real ID or if you are over 70), appointments are highly recommended. Walk-ins are accepted but wait times can be unpredictable.
